Mr. McCartney died June 4, 2008, at his residence.Born June 3, 1927, in Freeport, he had lived in Chardon for the past 46 years.He was a member of the F.O.E. 2261 in Chardon for 46 years, member of Guernsey Lodge 66 Free and Accepted Masons in Cambridge for 50 years, was a member and past president of Eagle Shrine of Cleveland, member of the Al Koran Shrine in Cleveland, and a member of Chardon United Methodist Church. He was an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed playing golf and was a connoisseur of chocolate. He enjoyed playing cards and especially loved spending time with his family.Mr. McCartney worked as building inspector for Geauga County and South Russell Village for 35 years before his retirement.Survivors are his wife, Freda (nee Cramblett) McCartney, whom he married July 10, 1949, in Moorefield; two sons, Sheldon (Becky) McCartney of Chardon and Scott (Susan) McCartney of Mentor; two daughters, Sharon McCartney of Mesa, Ariz., and Sandra (Tim) Allard of Auburn Township; six grandchildren, Nathan, Erin, Brandon, Amanda, Benjamin and Brittney; and two great-grandchildren, Glenn and Brylin.He was preceded in death by his son, Samuel McCartney; and brother, Robert McCartney.Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., (Route 44, 500 feet south of Route 6/Chardon Square), Chardon, where at Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. following the visitation. The Rev. Dr. Henry Woodruff of the church will officiate the service. Burial will be private.
