Walter W. Werman, 87, of Hambden Township, died Dec. 1, 2009, at Blossom Hill Care Center in Huntsburg Township.Born March 9, 1922, in Bedford, he had been a lifelong Hambden Township resident.Mr. Werman worked in food service his entire career. During the 1950’s, he taught the Japanese how to cook American food to feed the troops still stationed in Japan. He fell in love with the Japanese culture. He retired in 1982, from Highland View Hospital after many years of service.He married Eleanor Strobach Nov. 14, 1987, in Lyndhurst.Mr. Werman was a 1940 graduate of Chardon High School and a 1949 graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs. He was an active member of the Hambden Volunteer Fire Department, the Geauga County Historical Society Century Village and Red Cross Blood Drive. He was also an active member of the Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. Most recently, Mr. Werman enjoyed playing pinochle at the Thompson Senior Center.Mr. Werman was known for his knitted afghans, his cooking and canning, gardening, wood carving and bird watching. Mr. Werman enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends.Survivors are his wife, Eleanor (nee, Strobach) Werman of Hambden Township; aunt, Rose Green; and many loving cousins and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Augusta (nee, Green) Werman; and sister, Carolyn Werman.Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., (Route 44, 500 feet south of Route 6/Chardon Square), Chardon. There will also be a memorial service 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. The Rev. Jonyrma Singleton of Church of the Covenant in Cleveland will officiate. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
