Thomas Kevin McGarry
Dec 21, 1953 – Sep 26, 2023
Thom was a highly skilled artist who worked in oils and acrylics on canvas but preferred tight pen-and-ink illustrations. He and his wife Anne owned and operated a graphic design studio, McGarry Design, in Willoughby Hills. One of their most notable local projects was the designing and painting of the masks of tragedy and comedy found today on either side of the marquee at the Geauga Theater on Chardon Square for which they used a cherry-picker to reach the top of the building. After he and Anne closed their business, Thom kept himself busy working at Heinen’s in Chardon. Thom was a proud resident of Chardon for almost 40 years.
Thom graduated in 1971 from Orange High School and attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale to pursue his passion. At school he met his future wife, Anne, with whom he shared a love of art, music, and cooking.
Thom adored music; he played his guitar and sang beautifully to the classics. He was well-versed in many genres but particularly fond of classic rock, the songs of the 70s, and the sounds of Todd Rundgren, all of which he shared often with family and friends. He loved to read and had a particular interest in science and science fiction. Thom was a gourmet cook, though he’d disavow this fact to anyone who praised his talent. His holiday gravy at family meals will be truly missed. He loved good jokes and always laughed with a twinkle in his bright blue eyes. Above all, he had an unwavering love for his wife and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Anne Thompkins McGarry, and his parents William Robert McGarry and Vivian Lucille Cope McGarry of Pepper Pike. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Chris Manners, two nephews Steve Manners (Rachel) and Jeff Manners (Jessica), and four grand-nieces and nephews: Sarah, Riley, Joel, and Leah.
Thom was a remarkable individual. His family will remember his love, laughter, and gentle presence.
A private family burial will be held at a later date.
