STEPHEN K. GIPSON

Age 74 of Munson Twp., died unexpectedly December 31, 2018 at UH Geauga Medical Center. Born July 16, 1944 in Noblesville, IN, to Donald and Ruth (nee: Statzer) Gipson, he has been a Chardon resident since 1970. Steve was very involved with the Chardon Square Association for more than 30 years, he was instrumental in the building of the Band Stand on Chardon Square and very involved with the auxiliary of the Geauga County Fair, especially in the Flower Hall for over 30 years, because his wife was a member. He came to the area to help build and open the TRW Golf Course after graduating from Purdue University. Steve was awarded the Mal McLaren Award for professional excellence in 1995 and the Professional Excellence Award for The Ohio Turfgrass Foundation in 1980. He was a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 49 years and the Northern Ohio Golf Course Superintendents Association for 49 years and Past President in 1978-1979.

Survivors include his wife Jan (nee: Booth) Gipson of Munson Twp., daughter Kimberly Lyn (Mark Howard) Gipson of Stow and grandsons, Josh and Brandon Howard. Steve also leaves his mother, Ruth (nee: Statzer) Gipson of Westfield, IN, sister Cindy Harvey of Cicero, IN and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald.

Private family burial will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery. A Celebration of Steve’s life, will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Pilgrim Christian Church, 202 South Hambden Street, Chardon, Ohio. The family requests donations to the Purdue Research Fund, 403 West Wood Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907. In the memo “In memory of Stephen K. Gipson, for Agronomy scholarship.

We have so many memories of the great times with Steve and Jan it is impossible to list them all. All our camping times, sight-seeing trips, week-end get togethers included lots of card playing. We played many games of "Hand & Foot" with the last game being played here at our house just 4 weeks ago when Steve and Jan were here in Indiana to visit his mother and us. Steve was a super guy and will be missed by many.

He inspired me to pursue my career in turf management and continued to be a helpful and supportive friend over the years. Steve will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences on Steve's passing. I lost my beloved Bruce Denning in Jan. 2018. As fellow Golf Course Supt. in OH they knew each other well and I so appreciated Steve coming to Bruce's Memorial Service in Feb. 2018

The grounds staff at Fairlawn Country club would like to send our condolences to the Gibson family. A few of the staff that worked for Steve are still here and were saddened at the news of Steve's passing.

So many happy memories of 12 yrs of school at Carmel, IN.Steve & Jerry lived next to each other in town and enjoyed many activities together. Steve also got Jerry his first job at "Woodland CC that started his career in the turf business also. Then came the weddings! What pleasant memories Janney!

I remember growing up with Steve and Janice in Carmel, Indiana. We had alot of good times in school activities. I remember being in Steve and Janice's wedding. Janice , you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Knowing him as a customer, and later involved in business, he became a good friend. My best to Jan , and his family. The Green Industry has lost a leader.

My condolences. Steve was my boss at TRW Golf Course for 8 summers from 1977 to 1984. He did a great job handling a crew of mostly 20 college guys working there over the summers. He was very patient with us. I always remember his blue El Camino he drove and how he was an expert at turf maintenance.
