Services for Shirley H. (Nichols) Nelson, age 91, of Chardon, will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St. (on State Route 44, 500 feet south of Route 6/Chardon Square), Chardon.Mrs. Nelson died Sept. 15, 2008, at AlterCare of Mentor Center in Mentor.Born Oct. 15, 1916, in Jamestown, N.Y., she lived in Pittsburgh before moving to Chardon 44 years ago.Shirley Hope Nichols married Verne Nelson in Jamestown, N.Y on April 12, 1947. He preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1990.Mrs. Nelson was a member of Chardon United Methodist Church in Chardon, and the Summit Beagle Club in Southington. She enjoyed reading, baking and crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.Mrs. Nelson worked for Wayside Gardens Nursery for three years before she served as the Clerk for the Geauga County Board of Education for 10 years, retiring in 1977.Survivors are her daughter, Mary E. Lang of Jamestown, N.Y.; son, Robert (Judy) Nelson of Painesville; three grandchildren, Bruce Lang, Tiffany Lang and Linnea (Karl) Lucas; great-grandchild, Jonah Lucas; brother, Elliott Nichols of Kingwood, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Verne Nelson; parents, Elliott D. and Rose (Palm) Nichols; and sister, Jane Brandmeier.Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Henry Woodruff, Ph.D, of Chardon United Methodist Church will officiate at services. Burial will be at Chardon Municipal Cemetery in Chardon.
