Samuel B. Plants, age 64, passed away at University Hospital on Monday March 2, 2020. He was born on March 11, 1955 in Cleveland, the son of Bill T. Plants and Hazel (Sprowls) Plants.
Sam lived in Chardon for most of his life. He graduated from Chardon High School in 1973 and went on to study at Meredith Manor in West Virginia. He was active in the community and served as past President and is currently a director on The Great Geauga County Fair Board. In 2019 he was honored as an Outstanding Fair Supporter by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Sam was an avid horseman; for over 40 years he raised and showed Quarter Horses to many championships. His favorite class was Halter. He was also passionate about the Draft Horse program at The Great Geauga County Fair, his dedication and love for the Draft Horses help build the event into what it is today.
There is nothing that Sam loved more than his family, his wife of 41 years, Tammy and his beloved son and best buddy, Tyler. He was also the “favorite uncle” of Amanda, Robyn and Tommy and most importantly the keeper of the “chat-stick” for Avery. He was also known as the most honorable gingerbread house judge for his great nieces and nephews and the keeper of the trophies.
Sam is survived by his wife, Tamar C. (Menard) Plants, whom he married November 4, 1978; his son Tyler J. Plants; brother, Roger (Connie) Plants of Wickliffe; nephews, Roger Plants of Las Vegas, Ryan Plants of Wickliffe and Thomas Menard of Savannah, Ga; nieces, Amanda (Bill) Humphreys of Canfield, and Robyn (Scott) Westphal of Prosperity, SC, and six great nieces and nephews.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held at The Church of St. Mary, 401 North Street, Chardon, Friday, March 6 at 10:00 AM. A Celebration of his life will be held at The Great Geauga County Fairgrounds immediately following the Mass. Private family burial will be held at a later date. The family suggests donations to The Great Geauga County Fair Foundation, P.O. Box 402, Burton, 44021.
