Phyllis Jane Moats Pentek, age 94, of Chardon, passed away on March 15, 2018. She was born in Chardon, Ohio on July 9, 1923, to the late JW and Mildred (nee: Davis) Moats.
Phyllis was a 1941 graduate of Chardon High School in Chardon, Ohio, and went on to study fashion design at Darvis School for Fashion Arts in Cleveland, Ohio. During WWII, she worked at the Chardon Rubber Company until she joined the WACS in 1944. Phyllis completed basic training in Des Moines, Iowa, and was sent to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, where she attended Wakeman’s Medical Technician School. Upon successful completion of her training she worked as a lab tech for the Wakeman General and Convalescent Hospital at Camp Atterbury. Until her honorable discharge in 1946, Phyllis was part of the 54th Hosp Co and served as a Grade T4.
Phyllis loved to read and especially enjoyed Les Roberts books about the Northeast Ohio area. After her retirement from the Geauga County Board of Elections in 1984, she spent much of her time sewing for the people she loved. She also enjoyed making baby quilts for organizations that donated the finished quilts to local hospitals. Family was very important to her, and she looked forward to hosting Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and the Maple Festival at “the blue house’ on North Street each year. She was a crafty ‘handyman’ and loved home improvement projects.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Tom) Fazekas and son Jack, grandchildren Erin (John) Alice, Scott Pentek, Brian Pentek and great-grandchildren Tawna Alice, Austin Alice, Isabel Alice, Elizabeth Alice, Caleb Pentek and nieces.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Leonard J. Pentek, her brother Harold (Louise) Moats and sister Becky (Ed) Kleinfeld.
