Miriam Woods Clarke

A memorial Service for Miriam W. Clarke, age 97, of Burton, will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 23, 2010, at Burton Congregational Church, 14558 W. Park St., Burton 44021. Contact Jim for information at 440-834-4222.Mrs. Clarke died Dec. 14, 2010, at The Pines at Brook’s House in Troy Township.She was born Oct. 4, 1913, in Cleveland, and returned to Burton in 1995, after living in North Carolina for 25 years.Mrs. Clarke was a librarian at Western Reserve University, where she had received her master’s degree.Miriam married David E. Clarke on Aug. 19, 1939, in Cleveland.Miriam was raised in Lakewood and graduated from Lakewood High School. She was a 1935 graduate of Hiram College, earning her degree in library science. For the past 15 years, Miriam had been a member of the Burton Congregational Church, and a member of the Tuesday Club. Most recently, she established a library at Brook’s House, which was dedicated to her.Survivors are her son, James H. Clarke of Burton Village; daughter, Margaret Anne Cobble of Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Clarke; parents, Jesse and Margaret (Moore) Woods; one brother; and one sister.Burial will be at Hiram Cemetery.Contributions may be made to Burton Public Library, P.O.
