Mary G. Ahonen, 91, a lifelong resident of Chardon, passed away on July 24, 2011, at Chardon Healthcare Center where she had briefly resided this year.She was born on January 11, 1920, in Chardon to parents John and Niona (Halsey) Granger. She was married to Arthur W. Ahonen on August 30, 1941. He preceded her in death on August 19, 2005.Mary had been employed at Corey Hospital and Sargent’s Restaurant prior to her employment as a legal secretary for over fifty years. She had graduated from classes that certified her to be a court reporter, although she mainly used this skill when taking dictation, rendering her notes private.Mary was a graduate of Chardon High School, Class of 1937. She had membership in the American Women’s Business Association and was once named their “Woman of the Year. ” She was also a member of the Geauga County Republican Party and was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, Post 6519 in Chardon, OHShe enjoyed going to concerts and dances where her husband’s dance band, “The Alley Cats ” was playing. She also enjoyed card games, reading, sewing and camping.Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Rodger Bertke of Chardon Township. Four granddaughters: Kelly B. (Michael) Freeman of Indianapolis, IN, Laurie (Craig) Manahan of Lyndhurst, OH, Stacey Bertke (John Vadas) of Mentor, OH and Heidi (Matthew) Gilbride of Lyndhurst, OH. Five great grandchildren: Jennifer, Robert, Jacquelyn, Ryan and Jessica. Sister, Nina Nash of Painesville, OH and sister in laws, Elner Granger of Chardon and Margaret Ahonen of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, nieces and nephews of Ohio and Arizona.Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband, were sisters Carolyn Granger of Chardon and Maxine Filippi of Phoenix, AZ; brothers Edgar and William Granger, both of Chardon, and her lifelong special friend, Faye Sargent of Chardon, OHA memorial service will be held at a later date.
