Marilyn M. (Troph-Benton) Powell, 82, of Newbury Township, died April 5, 2006, at University Hospitals in Cleveland following heart surgery.She was born April 28, 1923, in Cleveland. She graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1941, Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and math from Kent State University in 1947. She then taught business math and algebra at Kent State University.During World War II, she worked for the war effort at Diamond Magnesium Chemical and Spectrographic Lab in Painesville. After their marriage, Marilyn and Charles took a 500 mile bicycle trip to Buffalo, N.Y., through Canada and attended the 1948 International Exposition in Toronto. In 1950, they moved to Washington state and upon the untimely death of her mother in 1951, returned to her family farm, AROC, in Newbury Township, where she has lived ever since.Mrs. Powell was a Daughter of the American Revolution and a Rainbow Girl. She taught Sunday School at Burton Congregational Church from 1958 until 1961, and served as a leader of a Blue Bird Troop and 4-H Clubs, when her children were young. She was also a substitute teacher in a number of Geauga County Schools for 20 years, retiring in 2000. The love of her life was her husband, whom she cared for until his death. She was a patriot, a strong environmentalist, loved music, played piano and never stopped educating herself. She loved this area and took great pride in her community and her history.Survivors are her daughters, Diana L. (Stanley) Sells of Columbus, Ramona I. Powell of Columbus, Charlene S. Powell of Worthington, and Ruth E. (Ahmed) Hawari of Uniontown; sons, Christopher Hodges (Nancy Shettel) Powell of Taipei, Taiwan, David William (Diane) Powell of Las Cruse, N.M., and Robert Bruce (Sherry) Powell of Newbury Township; 15 grandchildren; and niece, Melissa Benton of Arizona.Her husband, Charles H. Powell, whom she married March 23, 1946, at her home in Newbury Township while her brother was on leave from the Paris Peace Talks, died Dec. 15, 2003. Her parents, George Albert and Mona Mary (Hodges) Troph; stepfather, Roland Benton; and brother, Lt. Col. Robert Benton, Ret. Air Force, are also deceased.Pastor Harry Buch of the church will officiate the services.
