“TOGETHER AGAIN”
Lois J. Mascorella (NEE: BURTON), age 95, of Chardon, Ohio, died peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. Born November 5, 1925 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania to Harry L. Burton and Muriel Hunt, she lived in Geauga County for 74 years. She graduated from Westminster College with a major in French, a minor in English and completed a Masters Degree in Education from Kent State University. She married James Frank Mascorella on June 21, 1958, in Painesville, Ohio.
Lois spent her entire career in education, serving 31 years teaching French, English and Physical Education and later working as a guidance counselor and job placement supervisor. Beginning her career in 1947 at Chardon High School, she would later teach, counsel or supervise at Riverside High, West Geauga, Ledgemont and the Ashtabula County Joint Vocation School. She was also a basketball coach, cheerleader advisor and Dean of Girls and was known for her kindness and for providing sound advice and guidance. Many former students would in later years thank her for helping them through difficult times in their lives. It was the same with family and friends, her insight and empathy extended to all who touched her life.
She was a dog lover, an avid reader, enjoyed photography, music, word puzzles and Sudoku and attended many horse shows, particularly those involving the Morgan breed. Lois never lost her love of sports in general and was a devoted Indians and Browns fan. Lois was a member of the Thompson Methodist Church and enjoyed the friendships she had with the members.
Survivors include her Cindy (Steve) Lanning of Thompson, son, Tim (Belinda Brzezinski) Mascorella of Buffalo, NY, Granddaughter, Jessie Kankula of Thompson and Great Granddaughter, Selene Kankula.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James F. Mascorella, her parents Harry and Murial Burton, her step-mother Louise M. Burton and her brother Harry Lloyd “Bud” Burton.
The family extends many thanks to the kind nurses and staff at Maplewood of Chardon for their wonderful care and attention to Lois these past seven years. We also thank Western Reserve Hospice for the tremendous care provided in the last several months.
