Kathleen “Kathy” Rita Sull (nee: Melvin), age 81, passed peacefully into eternal rest on September 16, 2023.
Born in Cleveland, OH on January 11, 1942 to Rita Helen (nee: Murray) and John Raphael Melvin (both deceased), and known as “Kak” to her siblings Agnes Sull (Robert – deceased), Daniel, Patrick (deceased), Michael (deceased), Gerald (Patti), Eileen Obergas (Bob) and Robert (deceased) (Pat).
Beloved wife of 47 years of the late Norman Donald, she is survived by her children Don Sull (Theresa), Kari Brinkman-Sull (David), Mark Sull (Melissa), and 10 grandchildren; Charlie Sull (Lexi), Phillip Sull, Elizabeth O’Grady (Stephen), Genevieve Sull, Chance, Shane, Eva and Ethan Brinkman-Sull, and Josie and Bea Sull. Dear daughter-in-law to the late Chester Sr. and Genevieve (nee: Brej) Sull and sister-in-law to Chester Jr. and Carole (both deceased), Kenneth and Wanda (deceased), and James and Margaret (both deceased).
Kathleen excelled in school and graduated from Lourdes Academy in Cleveland at age 16. She had a lifelong love of learning and returned to college after raising her children to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies from Cleveland State University. She loved reading, history and writing with a focus on women’s issues, the Catholic Church, the history of Cleveland and the Irish in America. She also helped create Trolley Tours of Cleveland by researching history, writing scripts and giving tours.
She was a champion of the less fortunate and underrepresented, supporting women’s causes throughout her life. She volunteered countless hours and selflessly met the needs of others. Her volunteer work included creating and leading religious education programs for Saint Mary Magdalene Parish, where she made many lifelong friends.
Kathleen enjoyed listening to National Public Radio, visiting the library and walking the family dog in the Metroparks. She was skilled at knitting, sewing and crafting. She was witty, warm, generous, compassionate, loyal, and inspiring.
She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, love of silliness, and contagious laugh. She made others feel welcome and comfortable in her presence, displaying a writer’s curiosity about their lives and a deep empathy and compassion without judgment. Her home was a place for friends and family to gather for games and laughter.
A longtime resident of Willowick and Willoughby Hills, OH, she most recently resided in Chardon.
Private interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery beside her husband Norm (who could always make her laugh).
The family will be holding a Luncheon to Celebrate her Life on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at the Eastside Irish American Club, 22770 Lakeshore Boulevard, Euclid, Ohio (located in the Shore Center Plaza).
In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice in her honor would be greatly appreciated.
