John Phillip Grantham II, Age 65 of Huntsburg Twp., died February 5, 2023 peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cleveland on September 16, 1957 to John P. and Norma J. (nee: Sopko) Grantham, he was a lifelong area resident. John graduated from Chardon High School and the University of Wisconsin. He retired as Chief of Park Operations for Lake Metroparks after 30 years with the park system. John was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He loved trips to his cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, along with spending time with his grandchildren and his beloved dogs.

He is survived by his wife, Carrie (nee: Pomeroy) Grantham, children Emily (Jean Pitts) Grantham of Hambden Twp., Andy (Kalle) Grantham of Hambden Twp., and stepson, Tyler McCord of Cleveland; grandchildren Eva, Beau, Hudson and Bryce. Siblings Mike Grantham of Leroy, Teresa (Dave) Grabel of Madison, Lori (Dan) Combs of Chardon Twp., Jeff (Sherri) Grantham of Munson Twp., Matt (Tracy) Grantham of Hambden Twp., as well as a large extended family. John was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will host a gathering receiving friends on Friday, February 10, 2023, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., Chardon. A private family burial will be held at a later date in Larned Cemetery, Chardon Twp.

The family suggests donations to The Ruffed Grouse Society, www.ruffedgrousesociety.org.

It would be difficult to the point of being impossible to have found someone in any parks system who made it easier to developing a story for The News-Herald than was John Grantham. John was a rare find in being kind, generous with information to a reporter, and willing to give anyone and everyone else credit for the work he was responsible for leading. We remained friends after we both retired and frequently passed back and forth our outdoors stories. I shall miss John greatly. Michigan's UP just became a much more lonesome place.
