Mr. Degro was a US Army veteran of WWII. Sergeant Degro fought in the Central Europe and Rhineland Campaigns, earning the Purple Heart for wounds received at Schweinheim, Germany, a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement and the European-African-Middle Eastern medal with two bronze service stars, for active combat in the European Theater of Operations. He was a member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Newbury, Twp.He had been an active member of the Newbury American Legion Post #663, where he participated with the Rifle Squad. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Cleveland. Mr. Degro had served as a commissioner with the Geauga County Veterans Administration. He is survived by his daughters Marilyn Martell of Newbury Twp., Diane Henry of Newbury Twp., Joan Price of Randolph, VA, Susan Degro of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren John, Ricky, Tara and Aaron Martell; Amy and Scott Henry all of Newbury Twp.; sister Celia Folvarsky of Gautier, MS, niece Sheila Walker of Gautier, MS. His wife, Martha Kerver, whom he married in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1939, preceded him in death in 1986. His parents John and Mary Degro;sisters & srothers Helen, Anne, Marie, Julia, Charles and Andrew are also deceased.
