“Together Again”

Iphigenia “Effie” Planinc, of Chardon, Ohio, passed away on February 9, 2021 at her home. Effie was born March 29, 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, to John and Stamatoula “Toula” Bymakos. She was the loving wife of Thomas L. Planinc.  They were married September of 1957.  He preceded her in death on August 20, 2015.

Effie devoted her entire life to her husband Tom.  Together they enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing.  They owned 12 German Shorthaired Pointers and 2 Labrador Retrievers throughout their marriage.  They attended the Annual Pheasant Hunt of Pelee Island in Ontario, Canada, for over 45 years.  They enjoyed training their Labs at the Buckeye Retriever Club Grounds, where they participated in the AKC Hunt Tests.  Their dog “Windy” earned the title of Senior Hunter and Cleo earned the Title of Master Hunter.

They were “Snowbirds” and wintered at Okeechobee, Florida for 18 years.  While in Okeechobee they participated at the Amistad Ranch and Game Preserve Saturday Station Pheasant Hunts.  Their dogs would retrieve pheasants from the shoot.  Over the winter their dogs would each retrieve over 600 birds.  That is more birds than the average hunting dog would retrieve in a lifetime.

Effie retired from the General Electric Corp., Lighting Division with 44 years of service.  Her career started at Nela Park and ended at the Chemical Products Plant, Finance Department.  Upon retiring from GE, Effie worked many temporary financial assignments with Account Temps. She drove a Limo for A-1 Mr. Limo, Office Assistant at the Millennium Benefits Group of Chardon, worked in Catering at Borally’s and was a volunteer bailiff for the Geauga County Probate and Juvenile Courts for Judge Grendell.

She was past President of Police Wives United of Greater Cleveland.  The organization’s focus was to financially assist families of Cleveland Police Officers that were wounded in the line of duty.  Through her efforts a marching unit was formed and Police Wives United marched in many Cleveland parades following the police marching unit.  She was also a member of Buckeye Retriever Club, Ducks Unlimited and the NRA. 

She is survived by her sister, Stella Balale and was a loving aunt and great aunt to many.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Ann (Phillip) Daro, Frank Bymakos, Mary Bymakos, Athena (Earl) Williams, Antigone (George) Steigerwald and sister-in-law, Barbara Torok.

A Graveside Service will be held at Fowlers Mill Cemetery, Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate her life.
