Funeral services for Eugene Gene Teague, 83, Newbury Township, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Newbury United Community Church, 14916 Auburn Road, (just south of Route 87), Newbury Township.Mr. Teague died Feb. 16, 2009, at Burton Healthcare Center in Burton.Born Aug. 7, 1925, in Newport, N.H., he had been a lifelong Newbury Township resident.Mr. Teague and his brother owned and operated Teague Gravel in Newbury Township for 50 years before his retirement five years ago. He was a local developer and owner of the Lamplighter Court Apartments, Country River Lane, Clover Lake Drive, Oak Tree Trail, Scranton Woods Trail, Dora and Neal Drives and Teague Shopping Center, all in Newbury Township.He married his high school sweetheart, Marcella Kelling in the Newbury United Community Church Aug. 23, 1947. She preceded him in death Feb. 9, 2005.Mr. Teague was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving on a mine sweeper in the South Pacific. He served on the Geauga County Veteran’s Commission for over 30 years, the majority of that as their President, retiring in 2001.He was a graduate of Newbury High School, Class of 1943. He was a charter member of the Newbury American Legion Post 663. In the early 1950s, he and his brother-in-law, the late James Teichman, went to Toledo and brought back the cannon that today sits in Newbury Center Cemetery. He served as Grand Marshall of the Newbury Memorial Day Parade for more than 50 years. Mr. Teague served as a trustee of the Veteran’s Memorial Committee, constructing the memorial to all Geauga County veterans.After his tour in the Navy, he had a real love of boating, starting his boating career in 1958. Over the course of his life, he and his family had five boats. He was a member of the Western Reserve Yacht Club in Fairport Harbor, and was a member and Past Commodore (first acting) of River’s Edge Yacht Club, also in Fairport Harbor.Survivors are his daughters, Sandra (Larry) Podojil of Chester Township, Deborah (Richard) Kautzman of New bury Township, Cheryl (Wayne) Moster of Newbury Township, and Linda (John) Benbow of Newbury Township; grandchildren, Wendy J. (Michael) Chapic, Melanie A. Podojil, Kerri L. Kautzman, Sgt. Douglas J. (Lee Ann) Kautzman, Amanda L. (Jarrod Bartlett) Moster, Hallie M. (Dale Spangenberg) Moster, Brian S. Benbow, Brooke D. Benbow and Aaron J. Benbow; great-grandchildren, Sidney M. and Zach R. Chapic; and sisters, Shirley Phile of Leesburg, Fla., and Priscilla Rumplik of Auburn Township.He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella (nee Kelling) Teague; parents, Neal and Dora (Fisk) Teague; sister, Goldie Teichman; and brother, Donald Teague.Friends may call from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24th, at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St., (Route 44, 500 feet south of Route 6/Chardon Square), Chardon. The Rev. Patricia Hough of the church will officiate the service. Burial will be in Newbury Center Cemetery in Newbury Township.
