To say I was shocked and sadden by the news about Calvin would not be enough or the right words. I have known Calvin for a long time, like forty years but our encounters were mostly classes, conferences, and occasional emails. I am sad for the loss of Calvin personally, to his profession, and especially to his family and friends. Thank you, Lord, for Calvin’s time on earth and for having my path cross his and prayers to the family and friends who lost the most, but thankful for all the time all of us had to spend with him.

Deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Dr. Konya. His contributions to the engineering community are enormous and he has been not only a pioneer of analyzing the science of explosives but has been a great asset and teacher of hundreds of those who will now follow in his considerable footsteps - certainly not the least of whom is Tony.

I thought very highly of Cal. I had taken a blasting class of his. We collaborated on many projects together. Cal was always the professional, gently correcting misconceptions and encouraging both discussion and new approaches. The Blasting industry will sorely miss Cal. All of his family could take solace in the fact that Cal conducted his professional vocation with dignity, humility, thoughtful development, and mentorship. My best to Cal's family in remembrance of Cal.

Dr. Calvin Konya was my teacher and research advisor when I was a student at West Virginia University, Morgantown, and the Ohio State University, Columbus. He was a very intelligent, engaging, and respected professor. He cared so much about student success that he would spend several evenings teaching and mentoring students. Calvin was a very dynamic, transformative, and visionary leader with a track record of innovation and entrepreneurship. He developed some of the most widely-used techniques in rock fragmentation by blasting. He was a great motivator, and I owe a lot of my academic success to his generosity and friendship. I pray that God will grant Dr. Calvin Konya’s family strength to endure their loss. May his soul rest in peace.

My prayers for the family. He must have been a wonderful man, I know he raised a wonderful daughter, Eva. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Mike Mann left a message on December 1, 2021:
The world has lost a great blasting educator. Cal was instrumental in developing the earliest version of our State of Ohio blaster certification program and provided invaluable staff training and guidance to the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources' Division of Reclamation in the late 70's and early 80's. During the next four decades he presented insightful presentations on blast design fundamentals at numerous blasting conferences in the region, whenever he could fit them into his globe-trotting consulting business. I'm glad to have known Cal throughout my long career as a blasting regulator. We had many opportunities to discuss blast design problems and special studies. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family, and I wish Tony all the best in his young career as he takes the reigns of the consulting business his father spent a lifetime developing.

Calvin was a great man and teacher. He was always willing to share his time, patients, knowledge, and a story or two, to better others around him. I feel blessed to have gotten to know him and will not soon forget his teachings and friendship. My heart goes out to his family all those who were near and dear to him.
