Allen Wayne Ashley, of Put-in-Bay, OH, died unexpectedly on December 12th. Allen was born on August 9, 1948. The son of Eldon and Shirley Ashley, he attended Dundee High School. He was a very proud member of law enforcement, first with the Federal Bureau of Investigations then The Monroe City Police, and finally Monroe County Sheriff’s Department from where he retired in 1999. As he moved into retirement he found his place at Put-in-Bay, helping out at the Island Hardware & Market, affectionately known as Hardware Al, Just ask, he knew where it was in the store.
Allen’s first love was his family, boating was his true heart. Known to everyone as captain of the Deputy Dawg, he remained very active in the yachting world even when his health limited his mobility, and the boat was sold. A Past Commodore of Detroit Beach Boat Club in 1989, Associated Yacht Clubs in 1994 where he was the long-time Recording Secretary, and Inter-Lake Yachting Association Commodore in 1999 where he was currently the Executive Secretary. Al was the go-to guy in those groups, many times called the “elder”, always ready to give support or advice, but yes with a smile.
Allen is survived by his wife of 43 years Marcia, sons Jonathan and James, grandchildren Nicholas Ashley, Brendan Whited, Rhiana Whited, his constant companion Buster, and an abundance of friends.
A celebration of life is to be held at Detroit Beach Boat Club, 3028 Harborview, Monroe Michigan on Wednesday, December 20th starting 5:00 pm with an International Order of Blue Gavel Ceremony to follow at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to them to help provide a bench at his resting place in Put-in-Bay, where everyone can sit and chat with him when visiting the island.
