William “Bill” Joseph Shantz, age 82, of Claridon passed away in his home on June 5, 2022. Bill was born on October 8, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio to Josiah and Ruth (nee: Caulfield) Shantz.
A veteran of the United States Army, Bill worked for the United States Postal Service for over 35 years until his retirement and spent most of those years working a second job as everyone’s favorite bartender at Skeeter’s 19th hole in Claridon. After retirement, he spent fifteen years working for Geauga Transit as a driver and manager.
Bill loved his family and friends deeply and enjoyed many years at numerous family vacations, gatherings, sporting events, and camping trips where he reveled in holding court at the nightly “group” sessions around the firepit. He had a proclivity toward repair work of any kind and a seemingly innate knowledge of mechanical repair. He would commonly be heard to say, “Why would I buy a new one when I can just fix this one?” A substantial number of the tools and equipment he owned at the time of his passing predate his children. He took pride in a decades-long term as the patriarch of a large extended group of family and friends, many of whom only knew him as “Uncle Bill”.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Patricia (nee: Zilke); children, Belinda Shantz, Joseph Shantz, Timothy Shantz, Elizabeth Shantz, and Jennifer (Chad) Ellis; grandchildren, Emilio and Patrice Cordova and Raymond Shantz; sisters, Mary Lynne Berkesch and Kathleen (Ron) O’Hearn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Janet (nee: Totten), son William Christopher Shantz, and brother-in-law and dear friend Chris Berkesch.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 13th, 9am-11am at St. Helen Church, 12060 Kinsman Rd, Newbury with Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Burial at All Souls Cemetery will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Helen Church in Bill’s name.
Arrangements made by the Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chardon, Ohio.
