Shirley Baxter (nee: Davis), age 86, surrounded by her family, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, August 31, 2021. Born November 19, 1934, to Edwin and Evelyn (nee: Riblet) Davis in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a longtime resident of Montville.
She was an active member of Christ Covenant Church in Middlefield. Shirley was a well-loved and respected member of the community. She married Robert Baxter on April 3, 1953. They were married for 25 years when they went their separate ways until the Lord brought them together again and reunited them in marriage the second time Dec. 28, 1991. They spent every day together until Robert’s passing in 2009.
After being in Alaska where Bob was stationed in the U.S. Army, they returned to the states to start their family. While Bob was active in the Montville Fire Department for 20 years, Shirley was also active in the Montville Ladies Auxiliary. Shirley worked many years as a nurses’ aide at Geauga Hospital. Upon leaving that position to better care for her children, she then worked as a bus driver for Ledgemont for several years. She then finished out her working years at Channel Products, first in Chesterland and then relocated to the Jefferson plant where she eventually retired.
Shirley enjoyed gardening, crocheting and needlepoint. She loved watching America’s Funniest Home Videos. She also enjoyed crafts and coloring with friends while she was at the Residence of Chardon. But more than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren – they were truly the loves of her life and could brighten her life like nothing else.
She is survived by her children, Patty Baxter of Mentor, Joe Baxter of Huntsburg, Rick (Dee) Baxter of Orwell, Bill (Janet) Baxter of Hambden and Tammie (Bill) Moody of Austinburg; grandchildren, Jessica, Krystal, Jason, Katie, Ricky, Willy and Heather; and six great-grandchildren who all lovingly referred to her as “Nana.” Shirley is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marjorie (Baxter) Holihan of Port Clinton, nephew, Roger Davis of Mississippi, and her cousin, Lawrence Covey of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Baxter; brothers, Roger and Robert, her niece, Robbie Davis, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Pam Baxter. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Street, Chardon. The Funeral Service will immediately follow calling hours, and will be officiated by Pastor Mike Southern of Christ Covenant Church of Middlefield. Shirley will be laid to rest next to her husband Bob at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens at a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory can be made to the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League 5970 Green Road Ashtabula, OH 44004
Arrangements made by the Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chardon, Ohio.
