ROY D. “BUTCH” McGARY

Age 79 of Port Clinton, OH, formerly of Liberty Center, OH, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at Edgewood Nursing Home, Port Clinton. Butch was the eldest of five children born September 10, 1941 to Roy D. McGary, Sr. and Lucille (nee: Murdock) McGary. He graduated from Liberty Center High School in 1959 and went on to attend University of Toledo. First employed by Goodwill Industries, he then was employed by the Social Security Administration until his retirement. After retiring, he moved with his wife Nancy to Put-In-Bay, OH. While living on the island he was a dispatcher for the Put-In-Bay Police Department. Butch was also a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Put-In-Bay, and the Masonic Lodge, Liberty Center, OH.

On September 28, 1968 he married Nancy Duggan, who preceded him in death on October 15, 2012.

He is survived by his mother, Lucille McGary of Liberty Center, OH; sisters, Claudia (Jim) Funkhouser of Mesa, AZ and Catherine (Loren) Gentry of Granger, IN, brother-in-law, Clifton Martinez of Midwest City, OK; nephews, Miles (Janice) Martinez of Ft. Wayne, IN, Chad Martinez of Midwest, OK, Chris (Maureen) Funkhouser of Phoenix, AZ, Phillip (Keely) Funkhauser of Marietta, GA, Lucas (Ruthanne) Gentry of Nile, MI and Charles “Chip” Duggan of Put-In-Bay, OH; nieces, Mischa (Matt) Okuley of Wauseon, OH, Leah (Kurt) Weber of Winston Salem, NC and Dianne “Dee Dee” Duggan of Put-In-Bay, OH; as well as many great nieces and nephews, cousins, Aunt Helen, Aunt Delores and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; his father, Roy McGary, Sr.; sister, Colleen Martinez; and brother, Roscoe (Rocky) McGary.

A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Put-In-Bay, OH. Donations may be made to charity of donor’s choice.

Sorry to hear about Roy passing

Thankful for Roy’s eyes on my dad when he was rehabbing at Edgewood. “Uncle Roy” gave me updates via Facebook and was a friendly face for Dad during those weeks. I’m sure they could just wink at each other remembering all those shared Island Memories. Love to the family.

Very sorry to hear that Roy has passed. I'll always have fond memories of him, and it is a comfort to know that he is reunited in heaven with Nancy and other loved ones who have passed.

So sad to learn of Roy's passing. Roy and I worked together in the Toledo Social Security office where I was a new claims representative trainee and Roy was my mentor. Roy was excellent as a claims rep and a trainer. We both belonged to the Toastmasters club and I recall Roy's district winning speech regarding his accident, hospitalization and how he gave encouragement to another young man in the same situation. That's how I remember Roy, as an inspirer and helper to others. We also had many after hours office get togethers and Roy and Nancy were always fun to be with.
