Roger served three years in the World War II Combat Seabees and spent much of his duty in the Pacific Theater fighting in two invasions including the islands of Tinian and Saipan.

After the war, Roger was offered a job in San Diego driving heavy construction equipment, but chose instead to return home to Terra Alta and attend West Virginia University. After graduating, Roger taught and coached in Terra Alta and Woodstock, Virginia before accepting an offer at Newbury High School in 1957, where he was a long time teacher and coach before retiring in 1982. He later was inducted into the Newbury’s first Athletic Hall of Fame class in 2002.

Besides his love of sports, Roger collected coins, stamps, and political buttons. He loved to travel to such places as the Hearst Castle at San Simeon in California, Thomas Jefferson’s home in Monticello, or Washington DC to the National Seabee Monument, not far from where his parents are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Roger also traveled extensively in Europe, Russia, and the Middle East.

He was part of America’s greatest generation, married to his surviving wife Lou (Gibson) for 70 years, daughters Connie (Peter) Badour, Terry Carver, sons Daniel (Lyn), Randy (Nam Sook), Patrick (Christine) and grandchildren Natalie (Ryan) McMullin, Stephanie Badour, Adam (Jen) Holcombe, Ben (Roxanne) Holcombe, Lee (Becca) Casseday, Inshim Casseday, Injung (Anthony) Lifrieri, Charlie, Paul, and Freddy Casseday, along with 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ercil and Hilda Casseday, sister Eugenia, brother Ercil Jr., and grandson Joey Casseday.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Newbury United Community Church, 14916 Auburn Road on Friday, August 2, 2019. Celebration of Life Service will be held at Newbury United Community Church at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2019.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Newbury United Community Church, P.O. Box 308, Newbury, Ohio 44065 where Roger served as an usher for 50 years.

My heart felt condolences for your great loss.

Roger Casseday thought I was a pretty smart guy. That alone made him a really good friend of mine. He was a member of the Pentony/Casseday clan and that meant that you had to have a sense of humor and be relatively bright. He and I used to, as cousins, jerk each other around and I always felt it was likely he was always one step ahead of me. We chatted over the phone for 10 or 15 years and I am sure I always got more out of the conversation than he did. I will think of him as I go along. I hate it when a good man goes down.

My sincerest condolences to his family. Not only was he an excellent teacher (I was a high school student at Newbury in the early 70's), he was a kind man with a sparkle in his eye and a keen sense of humor. His students were blessed to have him as an example of the kind of person one should aspire to be.

Prayers to you Terri and all your family. May God give you peace and comfort.

Our deepest condolences to Roger's family. We will never forget him and the impression he made in our young lives as his students! Who would have thought that government class could be so much fun! Even though we haven't seen him in years, we often talked about our high school years and how memorable they were, and a lot of it had to do with Roger!!

I am saddened over the passing of Mr. Casseday. Mrs Casseday will be in my prayers for strength in the coming days. The Cassedays were not only teachers in their chosen fields, they were shining examples to generations of chilldren. He was my benchmark of family and a life well spent. My deepest condolences to Mr Casseday and family. I enjoyed having Mr Casseday as a teacher and gym coach at Newbury High School in the 1980's. My family and I also enjoyed having him and his wife as neighbors. He was a sweet man and left a mark in my heart.

Mr. Casseday taught not only subjects, he taught life. He was a gift to his students. RIP

I was so grateful to know "Ace" beyond the classroom and not only call him a mentor and friend, but a godly example of a fine man. I loved his sense of humor and the way he dealt with people.
