Robert Lee Engel was born on September 9, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan. Bob, 100, of Put-in-Bay, Ohio died April 29, 2020 in Huron, Ohio.
Bob was the son of Herbert Engel and Carrie (Lehman) Engel. In 1939, he graduated from St. Paul’s high school in Detroit, MI. In 1941, he served in the US Army. During World War II he was stationed in France as Staff Sergeant, 721st Field Artillery Battalion, 66th Infantry Division. He enjoyed his summers with his grandmother on South Bass Island, where he met his beloved bride. Bob married Ruth (Popovich) Engel on November 24, 1951 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Westpark, Ohio. In 1954 Bob moved to Cleveland, OH where he worked for 26 years at NASA. While at NASA, he was honored for his “outstanding accomplishment culminating in Apollo’s successful achievement of man’s first landing on the moon.” Upon retiring, Bob took over the Engel homestead on Put-in-Bay, OH and made it his full-time residence in 1980. Bob is survived by daughters, Carol Engel of Marblehead, OH and Lisa (Scott) Finley of Catawba Island, OH; sons, Robert R. (Fran) Engel of Huron, OH, Raymond Engel of Bonita Springs, FL, James Engel of Cape Coral, FL, Larry (Christie) Engel of Huron, OH, and Eric (Julie Leopold) Engel of Put-in-Bay, OH; one sister; 24 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth (Popovich) Engel in 2013, his parents, one sister, one brother, and two great-grandchildren.
A private family Funeral Mass will be held at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Put-in-Bay, OH on Monday May 4, 2020 at 11:00 am. Father Nicholas Cunningham and Deacon Mike Leahy officiating. A private interment will be follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery. If desired, there will be a Zoom meeting for family and friends to attend. Meeting ID: 611-126-5287 Password: roberte.
