Robert L. Gilson

May 29, 1933 - October 26, 2013

Robert L. Gilson, age 80 of Chardon died suddenly on Oct. 26, 2013 at his residence. Born May 29, 1933 in Washington, PA to Jean-Baptiste and Rose (nee: Bober) Gilson, he had been a longtime Chardon resident. He is a veteran of the US Navy serving in the Korean Conflict. Robert was an educator with Chardon Local Schools, Mentor Local Schools and retired as the Superintendent for West Geauga Local Schools. He was also a 20 year board member of the Geauga County Educational Service Center. Survivors include his wife of 54 years Myriam (nee: Kornhauser) of Chardon; son Rob (Montina) of Richmond Hts.; granddaughters Taylore, Kasey and Rylee all of Richmond Hts.; brother Jack (Betty) of Pennsylvania; sisters Cynthia (Tom) Myers of Maryland and Caren (Bob) Shekerko of Pennsylvania; many extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Audrey and brother Ronnie. FUNERALSVC: 10am on Saturday Nov. 2, 2013 at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South ST. (On Rt. 44, 500’ south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) Chardon, OH. VISITATION: 5-8pm on Friday at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place. Dear Myriam: This is Glenn Bitner and I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Gilson... unfortunately I was out of town and unable to attend the service. I have always, out of respect, called him - Mr. Gilson. He hired me as West Geauga Middle School Principal in 1985---and since that time he was a mentor, a professional colleague and friend. Without his guidance and wisdom I would have never survived my first years as a Principal. His "look" when you needed to consider a different decision -- and of course his "smile" when all was well... made him Mr. Gilson. We both agreed on one topic 100% of the time... the Steelers were #1. I would not be surprised if Black and Gold became heaven's favorite colors. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to work with and learn from him -- he was one of the best ever at West ! My prayers are with you and your family. Glenn Bitner

Ma chère Myriam. Habituellement j'adore tes histoires et ta façon de les raconter. Je n'ai pas aimé du tout cette histoire là, parce que je l'ai trop ressentie et j'ai trop ressenti combien tu es malheureuse. Bien que je n'ai pas vu Bob depuis des années, je ne l'oublierai jamais. Dear Gilson Family, I just wanted to say how sorry I am to have learned of your loss. May the God of all comfort sustain you during this difficult time.
