Richard A. (“Dick”) Miller passed away peacefully on 17 November 2022 at the age of 95.
Dick was born on 9 February 1927 to Harry and Della Miller in Cleveland, Ohio. Dick graduated from Bedford High School in 1945 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea as an Infantry officer from 1945 – 1947. Upon returning to Cleveland, he enrolled in Western Reserve University where he met his future wife, Carol, on a blind date. They married in 1948. In 1950 Dick graduated from Western Reserve with a degree in Business Administration and matriculated to Harvard Law School. Following graduation in 1953, Dick worked as a tax attorney for the C&O Railroad until 1960 when he accepted an offer to join the finance department at The Illuminating Company. Over the years Dick rose through a number of positions at The Illuminating Company (subsequently Centerior Energy Corp.) from Controller to General Counsel to Chief Financial Officer to President and Chief Operating Officer and ultimately Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
A leader in the Cleveland business community, Dick served on the governing bodies of numerous corporate (Bank One, Lubrizol), industry (Edison Electric Institute, Electric Power Research Institute, Ohio Electric Utility Institute), educational (Ursuline College, Cleveland State University), civic (Cleveland Tomorrow, Greater Cleveland Roundtable), and charitable (YMCA, St. Vincent Charity Hospital, Judson Park) organizations. He was a supporter of the deaf community, including the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, the Fairmont Theatre of the Deaf, and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf.
Dick was the true family patriarch and, in that role, was an integral part of the lives of all of his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter who cherished every opportunity to spend time with him which was always a learning experience. Dick was an avid sailor and a member of the Edgewater Yacht Club. He loved snow skiing in the West and instilled a lifelong love of skiing to many of his children and grandchildren. Dick was also an active member of the Walden Golf and Tennis Club, lived for many years on the golf course and enjoyed playing golf with friends. At Walden, he enjoyed memorable meals with friends and family at his favorite restaurant, The Barn, including a surprise 90th birthday party. Always intellectually curious, Dick was a voracious reader and had well-informed and thoughtful views on a variety of subjects and current events to the end.
