Once it is safer to gather together, a celebration of Matt’s life will be scheduled at Meister’s Bar in Grandview.

Matthew John Meister of Chardon, Ohio died unexpectedly on June 8, 2020 at UH Geauga Medical Center, surrounded by his heart broken family.

Matt was born on November 18, 1976 in Canton, Ohio to Barb and Mark Meister. He was a 1995 graduate of Grand Valley High School in Orwell, Ohio and received his Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1999. For the past ten years he and his cousin Todd owned and operated Meister’s Bar in Grandview, Ohio.

It is difficult in a few words to capture the essence of a man and a son, especially one as special and as kind as Matt was.

He was everyone’s “big brother”.

Matt loved his family unconditionally. There was nothing he wouldn’t do to help his Mom, who he loved dearly, or his brothers and sisters. He was a life-long fan of the Star Wars saga, sitting on his dad’s lap at the age of 2 to watch the very first episode. He loved all four-legged creatures, classic rock and roll, and his new home and life in Chardon, close once again to his mom and dad, his brothers and sisters, and their children.

Matt was preceded in death and welcomed into heaven by his grand-parents Bill and Marge Meister and his maternal grand-parents Tom and Jean Kirtley.

Matt is survived by his parents, Barb and Mark; his brother Kermit of Akron, OH; his brother Samuel and his wife Nicole and son Sammy T. of Chardon; his sister Jamie Shenker and her partner Rachel and their children Isaiah (Priscilla), Sean and Lily of Chardon; his sister Dr. Corrie Stofcho and her husband Brian and their children, Tyler and Billy of Aurora; his brother Jonah and his wife Mary of Lyndhurst; his girlfriend Melissa; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins across the country.

Dear Meister Family: I offer the deepest condolences in the death of your son. There is nothing anyone can say to console you. A parent simply should not have to bury a child. God hold you all in his arms and take your sweet angel to live with him in paradise!

Dearest Meister Family, Your beautiful son, brother, and uncle was one of the most genuine people I was fortunate to know. My deepest sympathies to you and everyone whose life Matty touched. Meeting Matt so many years ago through Todd and following them into their own business and supporting them along the way had been a joy. I am lucky to live in the neighborhood and going there was a little like going home. We watched football, movies, and it was always good to see his face and get a high five or a hug. So sorry and so sad - my thoughts and prayers are with Matt's family and friends. Matt was always so kind and pleasant and though I did not see him often, he will be missed. Glad for the fun gatherings at Meister's with my hockey family.

I met Matt back at Ohio State, and my memories of him are all wonderful. He was such a kind soul, a wonderful listener, and a fantastic person to hang out with. To say he was everyone's big brother is so true! My heart smiles when I think of those times in Columbus.

Just saw this tragic news on Facebook. It has probably been 15 years since I last saw Matt in person, but spent a lot of time with him at OSU. The world lost a good one. Prayers to the Meister family.

Sorry and shocked to hear about your loss of Matt. He was always such a nice and fun guy to be around and treated me good. You have such an awesome family that I know will miss him dearly and my prayers go out to all of you. It's never easy, but love each other and be there for each other. So sorry again. Cheers to you, Matty. I’ll never forget how much of a genuine, funny, smart dude you were. Every time I walked in you always asked how Courtney and I were doing whether you were annoyed with an idiot customer or not. The last time I was in Meister’s you had me belly laughing over Stinky Pete stories. Meister’s won’t be the same without you and I can’t tell you how saddened I was by hearing of your passing. Matt was such a kind and gentle soul who loved everyone no matter what. That's what made him special. Prayers are with the family to help bring comfort during this difficult time. You will absolutely be missed.

So hard to hear the news today, so sorry to the Meister family for their loss. There was not a kinder, sweeter person who cared for everybody. Although we saw each other much less frequently as time went along, I will cherish all of the time we spend together in college hanging out and listening to music, going to concerts, playing video games and buying CDs with money that should have probably been spent on food, the list goes on and on :) Mark and Barb - you raised an amazing guy, people were better off for having known him at some point in their lives. Rest is peace Meister, we will miss you buddy.

I knew Matthew when he lived with his aunt Mary. He was so sweet. Such a lovely person. I am so very sorry for your loss. It is tremendous.
