MARY GLASS BROWN
Age 83 of Chardon, Ohio, passed on to glory on December 26, 2021, at Ohman Family Living in Newbury, Ohio. She was born on February 16, 1938, in East Cleveland, Ohio, to Russell G. and Mabel (Nee: Hutchinson) Glass, and graduated from Euclid High School in 1955, where she was Swimmer of the Year. She then graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1959 with a degree in elementary/secondary physical education and general science. During her 4 years at OWU, she was active in swimming (President of the Synchronized Swim Club), volleyball, softball, and basketball.
Mary then taught at Wickliffe Jr. High School for 4 years and was an advisor to the gym leaders, cheerleaders, and the Honor Society. She also volunteered her time as a camp counselor and a swimming/boating instructor at Camp Julia Crowell in West Richfield, Ohio. She was also a canoe trip counselor for 2 years and troop camping director for 1 year at Hilaka Camp. She continued her volunteering at the Chardon Pool with the swim program for 4 years.
Mary served as a Cub Scout den mother for 4 years, volunteered as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and served as the district chairperson for the Girl Scouts for 25 years, during which she was named the “Distinguished Member” for Geauga County. She served as troop services director, Junior Scout advisor, Cadet and Senior advisor, was a delegate to the Lake Erie Council for 3 years, and as the Director for Day Camp at Big Creek Park for 2 years. Mary was also a substitute teacher for Chardon Schools for 4 years where she also coached volleyball.
Mary’s memberships include the Chardon United Methodist Church where she served as President of the United Methodist Women for 4 years, was a Sunday School administrator and teacher, a Lay Leader, and Mentor. She spent 15 years with the Chardon Square Association (2 years as President), and 6 years with the Chardon Recreations Board (2 years as President). She was also self-employed for 11 years as a dealer with Antiques on the Square, and spent many memorable years working at Framefinders on Chardon Square.
Mary loved spending her summers with her husband, family, and friends at their summer home in Ontario, Canada, where she had been going every year since she was 10 years old.
Survivors include her husband, Charles, whom she married on August 20, 1960; children, Scott D. (Jackie) of Chardon, Karen L. (Donald Wayne) McLeod of Chardon, Keith A. (Emily) of Alexander City, AL, Kathy A. (James) Tracz of Concord, OH, and Douglas C. of Chardon; grandchildren, Ryan and Mackenzie Brown of Chardon, Matthew, Hannah, Nathan, and Sarah Brown of Alexander City, AL, Jacob and Katelyn Tracz of Concord, OH.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Janet Bluem, and her brother Thomas Glass.
A visitation will be on Thursday, December 30, from 4-7 PM at Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 116 South St., Chardon, OH, where a family directed service will follow the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mary’s name to the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North Street, Chardon, OH 44024.
