Lloyd J. McKenna, age 89, of Chardon Twp., OH passed away on December 25, 2021. Born April 22, 1932, to Lloyd James and Helen (nee: Schoendorf) McKenna Sr. in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Mary Josephine Gallagher on July 2, 1955 (66 years of marriage) in Cleveland raising their family in Cleveland Heights, and Chardon, Ohio.
Lloyd proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After returning home he became a police officer for the Bratenahl Police Department earning the position of Police Lieutenant. He retired from the police department in 1984.
He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church; He enjoyed sports and help create the North East Ohio Mini Football League loved watching the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. He also loved playing cards, occasional casino trips, and gardening. He was a founding member of The Eastside Irish American Club, and created the Bratenahl Police annual St. Patrick’s Day Party. He was an avid Holy Name Alumni organizer/participant. Lastly, he was a huge dog lover bringing home over 25 stray dogs over the years of which his wife returned many.
He is survived by his wife, Mary J. McKenna of Chardon Twp., sons, Timothy (Patricia) McKenna of Chardon Twp., Daniel (Therese) McKenna of Munson Twp.; daughters, Mary Ellen (David) Warren of Concord Twp., and Karen Sweet of Chardon, OH: Grandchildren, Kayleen (Jimmy) Zorich, Bridgett (Steve) Pobuda, Lauren (Luke) Shealy, Daniel (Josie) McKenna, Joseph McKenna, Elaine (Chris) Franczek, Jessica Warren, Mary Sweet, Kathryn Sweet, Annie Sweet and ten great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, and siblings John J. McKenna and Eileen Ron.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Street, Chardon, Ohio 44024. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Mary Catholic Church, 401 North Street, Chardon. Interment to follow at Larned Cemetery, Chardon Twp.
