Our beloved Joanne Louise McGurer (nee: Carlson), age 90, passed in peace surrounded by her family on her 74th wedding anniversary Tuesday, August 30, 2022. Joanne lived a beautiful, graceful, and fulfilling life.
She attended Chardon High School where she met and fell in love with her soulmate Harvey E. McGurer. They were married in Cumberland, Maryland, then making their home in Chardon, Ohio. Joanne and Harvey went on to have five children Harvey D., Claudia, twins Chris and Cindy and Jimi.
Joanne was happiest when surrounded by her family. The larger the family grew her love and devotion grew as well. Joanne taught her children integrity, loyalty, compassion, and kindness. Nothing brought Joanne more joy than seeing that her children were happy. She suffered great loss with her two sons and son-in-law which she met with grace. She was blessed to hold her first baby girl great grandchild in the months prior to her becoming ill. She was more than a homemaker and Mom; she worked side by side with Harvey in all of his ventures. She was bookkeeper for Harvey’s Auto Service in East Claridon in addition to running for auto parts while keeping in tow four children for many years. She loved to cook and bake, in particular her awesome pies and even taught a grandson the fine art of good pie making. Christmas and birthdays had all the traditions, baking, decorating that she made exceptionally special for her family year after year. She loved to read. Enjoyed crocheting, cross stitch and making craft projects. She had a green thumb in the garden and especially enjoyed her roses. Joanne and Harvey were fortunate enough to travel to many places in the United States and abroad to the British Isles. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. Joanne was an organist for many years at the First United Methodist Church in East Claridon. She worked for the Board of Elections for more than 20 years and became a presiding judge. She was a volunteer at Geauga Hospital. She wrote a weekly column for the Geauga Times Leader on the happenings in Claridon.
She is survived by her husband Harvey, son Chris and Joceyln (nee Pfleger) residing in Garrettsvile and daughters Claudia Cassidy and Cindy Young of Middlefield. Grandchildren James, Collin, Kara, John, April, Kimberly, Michael Paul, and Kyle. Great Grandchildren Jordan, Carter, Luc, Belle, Christopher, and Elise. Daughter-in-Laws Diane and Tracey.
She was preceded in death by her parents Paul D and Amy Carlson, brother Paul, her sons Harvey and Jimi
Joanne will be deeply missed by her family. A life well lived, with amazing grace.
