Janis lived in Turkey with her family from 1967 to 1970 while her father held a teaching position. She loved to travel and spent the rest of her life exploring new places. Her family settled in University Heights, Ohio, where she graduated from Cleveland Heights High School, class of 1976.

She received her Nursing Degree from Bowling Green State University in 1980 and worked for a brief period as a Registered Nurse in Cleveland. She was a volunteer nurse with the Peace Corps in the Ivory Coast, and Chief Medical Officer in Zaire. Always looking for new adventures, Janis returned home and was accepted to The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, earning her M.D degree in 1988 followed by her residency program at The University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital and Clinics.

Janis settled in Shaker Heights where she married the love of her life, James Galm, on June 17, 1995, in Harkness Chapel on the CWRU campus. She worked as a Pediatrician for Akron Children’s Hospital for over 24 years, practicing from the Hudson, Ohio primary care clinic, retiring in 2022. While in Shaker Heights, she became a member of The Church of St. Dominic.

She enjoyed countless vacations together with her husband Jim, to Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest, Aruba, The Bahamas, Curaçao, and many others. She went on medical mission trips to Haiti and El Salvador to provide medical care to children in need. Janis held amateur radio callsign KD8RXV. Home was important to Janis as well. Janis and Jim relocated to Auburn Township in Geauga County, Ohio in 2013, enjoying 37 acres of beautiful land.

Of her many talents and activities, spending time with her family and close friends gave her the most joy. Janis traveled the country visiting with her family and close friends. When her health no longer permitted travel, her family and friends came to her. Of all her destinations and friends across the country, Janis was happiest at home with Jim and their three lively kitties, Fluffy, Camille, and Ellie.

Janis is survived by her husband, James of Auburn Township, OH; parents, David and Bonnie Parker of Cincinnati, OH; siblings, Kathy (Steven) Schmidt of Rochester, N.Y., Thomas (Phyllis) Parker of Indianapolis, IN, Curtis (Jacqueline) Parker of Zephyr Hills, FL, and Robert (Bethann) Parker of Salt Lake City, UT; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 3450 Norwood Drive, Shaker Heights, OH 44122 with a luncheon to follow.

The family suggests donations be made to El Salvador Project Serve, checks payable to Saint Dominic Church with memo: El Salvador Project Serve.

We loved Dr Galm so much!!!!! I cried today when I found out, she was a great woman and So wonderful with my daughter ?

My condolences Dr. Galm was such a wonderful Angel she took care of my children since they were born! One of the best Doctors EVER gentle kind and patient with children never met such a sweet person like her….

My children were her patients and I felt an immediate connection with her. She was truly a special woman and physician. She had a heart of gold and such a caring spirit. I have missed her since she retired. She will be dearly dearly missed. She truly was one of a kind.

My deepest condolences for the loss of Dr. Galm. 18 years ago my daughter was her patient after transitioning out of the NICU at Akron Children's Hospital. Dr. Galm was so caring and attentive to her needs and was exactly the pediatrician she (and we) needed. We are forever grateful for the care she provided. Prayers of peace and strength for her family.

We read with heavy hearts of the loss of Janice. She was a friend and trusted colleague who was dearly loved by her patients. She had so much more to give but alas it is not to be.

Dr. Galm: We met when we were both new to children's and I had the privilege of being your MA. You taught me so much and I quickly decided you would be the pediatrician to my precious girls. You were not only their pediatrician but someone that they looked up to and trusted during those oh so difficult teenage years! You set the bar high and as adults the now realize what a gift they had as their pediatrician! When Mackenzie was diagnosed with her brain tumor, you will never know how much it meant that you would go on your days off and take her for walks around the Cleveland Clinic Shaker campus when Eric and I had to work. One of your favorite stories was to tell of how Mackenzie couldn't talk but she sure could communicate that you were there to see her and not visit with your previous colleagues. She would just tap your leg and smile until you got the point that she was waiting for you to turn your attention to her and you did just that every single time that you visited! We will all miss our Luigis dates and just catching up with you. Thank you for not only being the best pediatrician to our girls but for also being a trusted and valued friend. Dr Galm was my residency preceptor and my girls' pediatrician. She is what I strive to be every day in the office. And I was blessed to work with her in Haiti as well. Eternal rest grant onto her, and let perpetual light shine upon her.

Dr G was my mentor and preceptor as well as my baby girls' first pediatrician. Her friendship, love and guidance meant the world to me, and she made an unforgettable impact on my life. She truly had a light that shined from within. We dearly loved her, and she will be missed.

Our family is saddened to hear of Dr. Janis Galm’s passing. She was a wonderful pediatrician that cared deeply for her patients. She has left such a tremendous positive impact in our life and we are forever grateful to her not just for her medical expertise, but for her friendship. She will be missed. Janis was such an encouraging mentor to me when I was a resident at Rainbow rotating at Health Hill. She had such a great attitude and was a role model in so many ways. I was always glad that she and I both ended up at Akron Children's, as we got to see each other at various meetings and would share patients as well. She was an incredible person and an outstanding pediatrician. Her husband and family have my deepest condolences.

She will forever be missed and my life has been changed because of her. I will miss you everyday my sweet friend. I am so blessed to have met you and be able to call you my friend.
