Harry R. Fernandez, of Hambden Twp., Ohio, peacefully passed away at the age of 98 on Saturday, December 12, 2020. The unconditional love he lived and taught will be carried on for generations to come.
Harry’s long and remarkable life began on July 12, 1922 in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Born to Jo and Anna Fernandez, he grew up on the family farm in Rome, Ohio with his brother Rudy. He attended high school in Beverly Hills, California and while there, worked at MGM Studios. He enjoyed telling his grandchildren stories and adventures he shared with the movie stars. Harry became a pilot after attending flight school in Arizona. He received high recognition during WWII where he flew in the United States Army Air Corp and led 33 successful bombing missions over Germany flying B-24 liberators. After the war he returned to Ohio and attended Kent State University. During this time, he starred in several plays and productions. He met the love of his life and wife of 73 years, Ruth. Together they had three boys, Rick, Fern, and Alan. Harry was a jack of all trades which included teaching for 25 years at Hambden, Berkshire and Perry Elementary schools, becoming principal at Hambden, He also was a carpenter for many years. He retired from the union in 1985. Harry also helped build the Perry Power plant. He loved his family above all else and enjoyed music, storytelling, and nature. He especially loved his property in Rome, Ohio. Harry will be laid to rest next to his mother and father in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
Harry is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; sons, Rick (Cindy) and Fern (Barb); Grandchildren, Mara, Gala, Alaina, Jessica (Kelly), Richard (Ashley), and Kyah (David). Harry had ten great grandchildren, Brooke, Lukas, Kaschner, Aiden, Sophia, Emma, Sebastian, Emerson, Finn, and Miranda.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Alan and granddaughter Tia.
