Age 93 of Bainbridge Township, died November 26, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Gerhard was born February 6, 1921 in Luebeck, Germany to Karl and Minna Anna (nee: Suelter) Rettig immigrating to the United States in 1925. Mr. Rettig retired from managerial positions at Ohio Bell in 1979 after 33 years of dedicated service. He was a 1943 graduate of The Ohio State University, with a Mechanical Engineering degree; a dedicated alumnus his entire life. Gerry proudly served in the US Army during World War II and continued in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1964. He was active with the Reserve Officers Association of the US Army. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Mary Lou (nee: Shipley) Rettig, whom he married November 7. 1943. He also leaves his children Susan (Charles) Rettig-Drufke of Bainbridge Twp., Cindy (Leslie) Kovalik of Aurora and Karl (Barbara) Rettig of Indianapolis, IN and his grandchildren Kristen (Jim Harrison) Wiley, Elizabeth Rettig, Jennifer Rettig, Karl “Will” Shipley Rettig, Serguei Rettig-Drufke, Alexander Kovalik and John Kovalik. Gerry and Mary Lou also have extended family through the American Field Service: Cicelia Coriasco (deceased) from Argentina and Knut Harg from Norway. He also leaves his sister, Helga Leeder of Columbus. A Memorial Service will be held at Church of Aurora, 146 South Chillicothe Road, Aurora, Friday December 5, 2014 at 11:00 A.M.
