Gerald C. Hornick, Age 86 of Chardon died September 15, 2018 at Chardon Healthcare Center, following a brief illness. He was born June 23, 1932 in Johnstown, PA to Paul and Gertrude (nee: Cowen) Hornick. Gerry was a 1954 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Delta Upsilon, with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He began his career with Union Carbide in West Virginia, where he met Sally, his wife of fifty-seven years. He then came to Chardon in 1968, where he started his career with Structural Fibers, retiring as President in 1999. His work with Structural took him around the world, building plants in Belgium, Italy, China and India. He was a long-time member of Chardon Rotary, serving as president in 1999. He was named as “Business Man of the Year”, 1999 by Chardon Chamber of Commerce. Gerry served on the Geauga Park District Board of Trustees, Board of Directors of Kent State, Geauga Campus and The Leadership Council for University Hospitals, Geauga. After retiring, he achieved his lifetime goal of becoming a private pilot at age 70. Gerry was very active with Experimental Aircraft Association and made many lifetime friends at the Geauga County Airport. He was a car enthusiast, restoring many Mustangs, Porsches and VW’s over the years. He belonged to the Mustang and Porsche Clubs. An avid toy train collector, he was a longtime member of the Train Collectors Association.
Gerry is survived by his daughters Laura (Jim) Behning of Covington, GA, Elisabeth (Patrick) Julian of Louisville, Aimee (Jonathan) Grimm of Moreland Hills, and Katherine (Kasie Podojil) Hornick of Chardon; sons Steven (Kimberly) of Louisville, and John (Mollie) of Oakdale, PA; grandchildren Patrick, Emily (Doely Quinones), Jennie (Ryan) Sanderbeck, Andrew, Gerald, Alex, Julia, Murphy, Neve and Lucy; great granddaughter Claire; many extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 siblings and wife, Sally who died in 2013.
