Elsie “Babe” Liplin (nee: Chaloupka), aged 94, of Chardon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2021. Elsie was born on July 18, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Beloved mother to James (Susan), John (Leslie), and Jeffrey (AnneMarie), all whom she loved immensely. Dear Grandmother to Steven (Renee) Thayer, Steven (Lori) Kumher, Thomas (Sophronia) Liplin, Heather (Jeffrey) Bereckis, Jeffrey (Emily) Liplin, Jonathan (Brittany) Liplin, Jeremy Liplin, and John Campbell. Loving Great-Grandmother to Johnathan, Jillian, Rachel, Shannon, Stacey, Callie, Madelyn, Ella, Hank, Halle, Tammy, Scarlet, Josephine, Norman, Ona, Virgil, Jonathan, Lucas, and Wesley; Special Aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Elsie was lovingly referred to as “Babe” by family members, as she was the youngest child in her family. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband John, parents Alois and Rose (nee: Smolik) Chaloupka, brothers Joseph and Louis, sisters Mildred, Ann, Helen, Rose and Mary, granddaughter Tammy, and grandson Christopher.
Family was Elsie’s greatest joy in life, followed closely by good food. Family and friends couldn’t leave her home without having tried one of her home baked goodies. She was especially known for her kolacky. When she wasn’t baking, Elsie loved to share a good meal with her loved ones. She was particularly fond of chicken paprikash, pork dinners, and asian foods. She also loved her snacks; ice cream, coconut cream pie, strawberry rhubarb pie, and nuts, many of which she gifted tins of to family members each Christmas. Elsie loved a night of dice or nickels, she taught all of her grandchildren to play too, and even introduced them all to shots of schnapps for the winners.
Elsie was known to have a special spark that was contagious. She had a quick wit, loved crosswords and word finds, was fond of singing and dancing, especially to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and loved bird watching. In her younger years, Elsie was enthusiastic about dancing, bowling, traveling, dining out, crafting, and embroidery. Elsie was proud of her Czech upbringing, and recalled lovely, large, multi-generational get-togethers with family, celebrating their heritage.
After raising her boys, Elsie was employed as a secretary by the YMCA for many years. She was a long-time member of the Pilgrim Christian Church in Chardon, Ohio, where post YMCA she was also employed as the church secretary for a number of years. She was guided by and lived by her faith.
Elsie will be buried at the Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland, Ohio, alongside her husband in a private ceremony. As Elsie was known to donate to a number of charities, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice, in her name.
