We will have another celebration at St Mary’s in Chardon come the spring thaw. You know how Ed did not enjoy the cold weather anymore so do not feel that you need to make the trip south.

Ed McCarthy, 82, passed away peacefully November 4, 2018. Born October 18, 1936 in New York City, he graduated from Xavier High School in 1954 and Villanova University in 1958. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany.
He married his high school sweetheart, Jane (nee Giddings) 57 years ago. They have six children…..Kevin (Natalie Dunmire), Kathleen (Michael Hoffmann), Kristine (Jim McNicholas), Kerry (Cindy Mason), Kenneth (Karen Kausek) and Kara (Brian Passow). They also have 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Ed is also survived by his brother James (Betty Ann), sister in law Anne Murphy and their children.
Ed’s work with Metropolitan Life Insurance took him from New York City via Allentown, PA to the Cleveland Ohio area where the family settled and lived in Chardon for over 30 years. Answering the call to ministry, Ed was ordained a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Cleveland in 1983 and served as Pastoral Minister at St. Mary’s Parish in Chardon. Upon retirement to Naples, he served as Deacon at St. Agnes Church. He spent his summer months as an associate in the Religion Department at Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York.
He had a significant impact on many lives as he presided over weddings, baptized many children and held the hands of many during joyous and sad occasions. He was truly a remarkable man who gave of himself to help others at all times. He and his wife Jane have never met a stranger; theirs was an open, tolerant and loving faith, which Ed lived every day of his life. It took only one meeting to be drawn by his booming voice, gentle spirit and an oversized bear hug. He never failed to be an amazing example of love, faith, fidelity and true happiness.
A Celebration of his life and service to others will take place on Saturday, November 10th at 11:00 a.m. at St Agnes Parish in Naples. Family will receive friends starting at 9:30 a.m. Please know we feel the love and prayers that have been coming. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Chautauqua Institution in his name.

Our hearts go out to the McCarthy family during this time of such great loss. Many prayers for peace and comfort. Deacon McCarthy was a man among men. Anyone who met him couldn’t help but stop and listen to what he had to say. His smile and laugh filled the room he stood in. The light in his heart shown through his eyes. He will always be a very special man to our family. We share in the sadness in his exit from this life and rejoice in knowing he is home with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Although I moved away from Ohio long ago and had not seen Deacon Ed in a while I loved him and his family. Mrs McCarthy was one of the best teachers I ever had and Ed was always a larger than life and stable force for his family and our church. I specifically remember Christmas 1989 when I came home from college and my family and I attended a Christmas party at their house. He was such a huge presence and was so warm and loving to everyone there. I have many fond memories of him and know he is greatly missed. My prayers go out to his wonderful family.

Mr. McCarthy, thank you for being a sincere and genuine example to me when I was growing up. Thank you for marrying us. Thank you for being there when my father passed. Thank you for being you. You know, I listened to you and I admired you and quite frankly, I've tried to be like you. I Know you are enjoying your reward in Heaven and that someday I'll see you again. To your Family...I love you all. You are in my thoughts and in my heart. -Michael

Dear family: It has been many years about 38 to be exact. Since I have had that big hug and handshake. Heard that booming voice and received that great smile. Will always remember the good time at metropolitan on Chardon rd. May his soul and all the souls of the faithfullly departed Rest In Peace. Dennis Rieder

Jane and family, I am so deeply saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I will cherish the rest of my days this generous spirit, our prayers at the Peace Pole, our lovely dinner and conversation at the UM Vacation Home this past summer at Chautauqua. My prayers are with you.

My prayers are with you and your family Kris. Your dad sounds like an amazing man. My heart goes out to all of you.

Mrs. McCarthy, I used to wait on you and your husband at the Bank in Chardon. It was always a pleasure to see or hear from you on the phone when you moved to New York. I hope with all my heart that God will help you and your family in your time of need. I have missed you both since I left the Bank. May God bless you and give you the strength that you need to make the next journey of your life.

Ed was a great man, in every sense of the word. His spiritual stature matched his physical stature. His gentle and loving presence was a manifestation of God’s love in this world. He was so down to earth, with a charming Irish twinkle in his eyes. I will miss him so much. And I know that Jane will be surrounded by the love and support of so many of us.

I so enjoyed working with Ed when he presided at morning worship. I write the morning worship service review for the Chautauquan Daily and he always greeted me with a hug and 'Hey, kid. How's it going?" He was so at ease with people and was one of the people I always looked forward to seeing him each summer.
