Agnes Marie Miller, 91, died Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, with her family by her side. At the time of her death, Marie was a resident of Chardon, Ohio, living with her husband, Joe.
Early in life Marie was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Later in life, she was a member and volunteer at the Geauga County Historical Society, a member of the Holden Arboretum, and a supporter of The Salvation Army, PBS and Native American youth education.
She was born on March 18, 1928 outside of Amesville, Ohio to George Henry Bryson (1908-1979) and Agnes Bell Smith Bryson (1907-1981). She was married for 71 years to her husband, Joseph Miller, having married on May 1, 1948.
Her early life was spent with her parents and siblings on farms in and around Utley, Hooper’s Ridge and New England, Ohio. To attend high school, she moved into Amesville, Ohio. There she lived with Birchie and Riley Thompson and worked in their restaurant after school and on the weekends. It was in that restaurant that she met her future husband. She graduated from Ames-Berns High School in 1946. Some of her closest school friends were Mary Lee Thompson (daughter of Birchie and Riley Thompson), James Dillie, Mary Adelaine Cunningham and Mary Armstrong.
After her marriage, she moved to West Virginia for two years with her husband. They subsequently relocated to Northern Ohio where she lived the rest of her life. Her many friends, too many to list, and her family will all miss her bright smile, her kindness and her love of life.
Marie was a wonderful wife, caring mother, loving sister and good friend to many. She had a voracious appetite for knowledge and read several hours every day of her life. Her interests included studying ancient cultures and history, collecting antiques, gardening, travel, baking, playing cards and entertaining with her many friends. She was a collector of Tasha Tudor’s writings and illustrations. She loved all animals, big and small. Marie cared for her beautiful flower gardens and tended to her husband, family and friends with loving concern. Anyone that knew Marie knew that she was incredibly intelligent, good hearted and a kind and loving friend.
Marie is survived by her husband, Joseph “Joe” Howard Miller; 2 brothers, Richard Paul Bryson (wife Judy), and Kenneth Burl Bryson (wife Kay); 3 sisters, Florence Joan, Rosalie Creola (husband Roy Newberry) and Shelba Jeanne (husband Clarence “Duke” Anderson); 2 sons, Joseph “JH” Howard Miller, Jr, and Timothy Paul Miller (husband Danny Sprouse); and 29 nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by 2 brothers, William Henry Bryson and Robert Lee Bryson, and by 1 sister, Shirley Ann Sloan.
Arrangements are with Burr Funeral Home in Chardon, Ohio. A visitation with the family and friends will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM with a memorial service starting at 11:00AM. A graveside service will immediately follow the memorial service.
