Joseph H. Redmond, 89, of Leroy Township, entered the Lord’s heavenly presence on Saturday, June 3, 2017. He was born on May 27, 1928 to Herbert and Edna (McLemore) Redmond in St. Louis, Missouri.
He married Hildegarde A. Janek on May 6, of 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Chardon by Fr. James Maher. They were married 67 years.
As a youth, he lived in Missouri and later in Cleveland, Ohio. For a time he worked for the Honolulu Oil Company in the California oil fields as a roustabout and then as a roughneck.
After moving to Ohio and marrying, he became a union electrician, being a proud member of Local 673 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), where he was a member for 65 years.
He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling; especially enjoying many winters in Florida. He and his wife were members of St. Patrick’s parish in Thompson, Ohio. He faithfully attended mass with his loving wife Hildegarde until they were unable to attend due to their declining health. However, Deacons Bob Schwartz and Phil Kraynik gave them compassionate pastoral support and brought Holy Communion weekly. Anyone who knew Joe experienced his penchant for storytelling. He loved to tell a good story.
He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Rita Redmond, Patricia Redmond Chiudioni, and Richard Redmond.
He is survived by his children: Joseph (Betty) Redmond, Jr., Hildie (John) DeGreen, Bill (Pam) Redmond and Rita Johnson; grandchildren: Josh (Tenille) Redmond, Nate (Stacy) Redmond, John J. (Maura) DeGreen, Jr., Lisa (Michael) Jones, Matt (Ruth) Redmond, Julie Redmond, Adam Redmond, Keith (Kate) Johnson, Marie (Chris) Weeder. He had eight great grandchildren: Brace, Parker, Carlee, Michael, Johnny, Jacob, Haleigh and Alana. He is also survived by siblings, Betty Jonke, Peggy (Richard) Carlo, and Sandy (Bill) Mitchell, brother in law – Francis Janek and sister in law – Marian Zalar, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday June 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Street, (On Rt. 44, 500′ south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) Chardon, Ohio. His Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9th at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 16550 Rock Creek Rd., Thompson, Ohio 44086. Following the service a light luncheon will be provided by the parish.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Carla and the staff of Hospice of the Western Reserve for their compassionate care and support; also thanking Tiffany and Danielle, all the caregivers at First Light, and the family members who have assisted with Joe and Hildegarde’s care including Marie, Julie and Michael, for their ongoing support.
Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 16550 Rock Creek Rd., Thompson, Ohio 44086 or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44110.
