Velma E. Tann (nee: Chapman) age 95 of Chardon passed away Dec. 24, 2016, the 7th of 9 siblings, 2 weeks short of her 96th birthday, at Maplewood of Chardon. Born January 8, 1921 in Jefferson, OH to Alvertis “Bert” and Rosetta (nee: Speaker) Chapman; she had been a longtime Chardon area resident. Velma was a member of the Chardon Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She graduated from North Baltimore High School, Class of 1939. Upon return to this area, Velma met Thomas E. Tann while working at Chardon Rubber, eventually marrying him on Dec. 28, 1941 just after Tommy enlisted in the Army. Velma “Vel” was a strong and loving wife, mother, grandmother who always put the interests of her family and others ahead of her own. She worked for the Geauga County Commissioners for a number of years where she was greatly valued as an efficient and conscientious employee. Velma was quite an accomplished horseshoe player. She also enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, pinochle and playing board games with her grandchildren who adored their “Granny”. Her greatest interest was in her family, and she remained involved in the life of each and every family member for as long as her health allowed. She was cherished by her children: Judy (Joe) Bolan of Chardon, Linda (Bob) Kangas of Montville and Donna (John) Collier of Chardon; grandchildren Joe (Cheryl) Bolan Jr, Julie Bolan and Jill (Ron) Rua, Tom Kangas, Roger (Jackie) Kangas, Michael (Aimee) Kangas, Gregg (Rachel) Kangas and Matt (Kelley) Kangas, Chris (Celeste) Collier and Dave Collier; 26 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren; sister Marilyn Chaffin-Twining, and many nieces and nephews who survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of over 69 years Tommy, whom she lost April 23, 2011; brothers: Albert (Jo), Leonard “Rosie” (Ruth), Charles “Chuck” (Doris) and George (Jean); sisters: Pauline (Bill Bailes), Esther (George Deel) and Dorothy, who died as a toddler; A memorial gathering will be from 4 to 8pm on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016 at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South ST. (On Rt. 44, 500’ south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) Chardon, OH.
