Marie Mildred Giesler (Millie) passed peacefully on March 26, 2017 at the age of 94. She was proceeded in death by her parents Jens Marinus Frandsen and Kristiana Hansen, husband Robert Carl Giesler, daughter Kristine Gehrs, brother Harry (Rita) Frandsen, and son in law Bruce Abe. Millie is survived by her daughter Kathleen Abe, son in law Norm Gehrs, grandchildren Karyn (Don) Vaughn, Megan (Shawn) Hufendick, Kelly (Seth) Engstrom, and Robert (Rachel) Gehrs, and great grandchildren Morgan, Tyler, Ryan, Evelyn, Nora, and Micaela.
Millie was born on December 23, 1922, two years after her parents arrived in America from Denmark. She celebrated her Danish heritage each year on her birthday by teaching her grandchildren and great grandchildren how to make ebelskiver. Another tradition began where she acquired a large copper kettle. Family and friends joined her and Bob at their home, the Grindstone Farm, to make apple butter, ride horses, and go on hayrides. Both traditions continue to be carried on by her family, and will for years to come.
In the same spirit of love for family, she hosted Christmas every year, extending a large table to fill the width of the house and seat the entire Giesler family. Her home was welcome to all. She made each person she met feel special and loved. She was an avid record keeper and created journals about each family member, making them feel like their life was worth writing about. She was always on call for both of her daughters and enjoyed being a very involved grandma, never missing a baseball game, play, concert, or school event. She even kept lawn chairs in her trunk to be prepared for anything.
Millie was a cheerleader for her family, but she began as an actual cheerleader at Mayfield High School where she was introduced to her husband Bob, a basketball player at Brush High School. They married in 1946 after Bob returned from the Army. Bob was a carpenter apprentice with her father and they built their first home together on Belrose Road in Mayfield Heights. They started a family and formed lifetime friends with the Belrose gang. They later moved to Chesterland.
A celebration of Millie’s life will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 11:30 am at St John Lutheran Church, 4386 Mayfield Road, South Euclid, Ohio 44121 where Millie was a lifetime member. A luncheon will follow with a chance to fellowship together and enjoy many of Millie’s favorite foods. In lieu of flowers, family would suggest donations to Ohio Living Breckenridge Village (36855 Ridge Rd, Willoughby, OH 44094) and Hospice of the Western Reserve (17876 St Clair Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44110).
