JOHN WESLEY SLAUTER
Age 86, of Thompson Twp., OH, died on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at the Residence of Chardon. He was born on March 3, 1931, in Columbus, OH, to Charles H. and Lucetta C. (Nee: Tanner) Slauter. John had taught at Eastlake North High School, then retired as a professor at Lakeland Community College.
He had served in the US Army during the Korean War, and then received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Capitol University. Mr. Slauter continued his education, receiving his Master of Science Degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Slauter had lived in Thompson Twp., OH. John loved travelling in the USA and overseas, was an avid sailor on Pymatuning Lake, and had a great love of dogs. He was a scientist, amateur radio operator, an observer for the National Weather Service, mathematician, tinkerer, and an avid amateur astronomer. For his telescope and optical cameras he built a personal observatory, where his neighbors spent many educational nights looking into the heavens. This observatory was donated to his alma mater, Capitol University in Columbus, OH. One of his favorite pastimes was to show up at the house of his neighbor of 25 years, John and Janet McDougall, with a container of ice cream to share.
He is survived by his niece Mary Slauter, of Texas, and his nephew Mark Slauter and his wife Margaret, of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles H. Slauter, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Camp Willson in Bellefontaine, OH.
The family will hold a graveside service on Tues. August 15 at 11:00 at the Woodlawn Cemetery, 1502 W Central Ave, Toledo, OH.
