JAMES ROY COLBOW, Age 91, of Chardon, died on Wed., July 16, at his home. He was born in Cleveland, OH, on June 13, 1923. The family moved to Montville, that same year. Jim worked the family farm with his two brothers until he enlisted in the US Navy and fought in both the European and the Pacific Theaters during WWII, earning a Commendation and three Bronze Stars, in addition to his Campaign Medals, leaving as a Gunners Mate 1st class. While working as a machinist, he attended and graduated from The National Radio and Television School in Cleveland, and continued working as a machinist at Motch & Merryweather, while moonlighting in television repair. His entrepreneurial dream was realized in 1968 when he began his TV sales and repair business, Unit-ized TV in Euclid, retiring in 1986. Afterwards, Jim traveled to several parts of the US and snowbirded in the south for the winters. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, telling of his adventures of his time in the military. Some of his stories are documented in the Library of Congress, Veterans History Project, from his 2003 WBKC radio interview for “Legacies: Stories from the Second World War”. In his later years, Jim took on the new challenge of perfecting his baking recipes and making pastries for everyone he knew. In the same style as the rest of his life, striving to be the best at whatever he did, at picnics and parties, his desserts were always gone before the main course. He is a member of the Willoughby Hills VFW Post 4358 and Montville Amvets Post 1968. He was an exceptional father.
Survivors include his daughter, Catherine Winona (Ed) Plescott of Euclid; son, James T. Colbow of Rock Creek; sisters, Sue Graham of Coshocton and Bertha Stewart of Ft, Myers, FL; grandchildren, Krissy (John) Rosewell, Jeffrey Baldrey, and Alex (Caroline) Colbow. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick “Fritz” and Dorothy (Nee: Kalish); and siblings, Clara Ziska, Lydia McNaughton, George and Art Colbow.
