HARLEY D. SMITH, Age 89, a longtime resident of Hambden Twp., died on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at University Hospital in Cleveland, OH. He was born in Chardon Village on June 29, 1927, to DeWitt and Vernie (Nee: Olds) Smith. He was a 1945 graduate of Chardon High School, and married Ellen Tucker in Hambden, on April 11, 1952.
Harley had worked for the Nickle Plate Rail Road for 5 years before becoming a laborer for the former Chardon Rubber Company, where he retired after 33 1/3 years on July 11, 1990. He was a member of URW Local 557, a life member of the National Model RR Association, and had also served as the Township Constable, as well as a member of the Hambden Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife; daughter LuAnn (Dennis) Burger of Montville Twp., and Dale (Deborah) Smith of Hambden Twp.; 4 grandchildren, Juli Stone, Sally Chapek, Paul Burger, Sarah Smith; 6 great-grandchildren, Cara Stone, Charlie Chapek, Collin Chapek, Carter Chapek, Austin Burger, Trystin Burger; 3 step grandchildren, Carrie Stokes, Darcy Bishop, Dameon Keller.
VISITATION will be on Saturday, May 27, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St. Chardon, OH, with a MEMORIAL SERVICE held at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Hambden Cemetery, Thursday, June 1 at 1:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to Hambden Fire Dept., 9867 Old State Rd, Chardon, OH 44024.
