Betty Louise (Caves) Ballantine, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 5, 2012. She was born May 31, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Erwin J. and Dorothy (Farley) Caves.Betty was a 1943 graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, attended Fenn College, and served during WWII in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class. She was stationed at the Aviation Fire Control School in Jacksonville, FL.She had been a resident of Chardon since 1958. Betty worked in accounting for GE, Nela Park and later in final inspection at LFE Corp., Chesterland, retiring in 1986.She most enjoyed spending time with her family, music, and helping others. Over the years she has volunteered countless hours for her church, Chardon Quality Care Center, Geauga County Senior Citizen Center, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, both at the local office and the Good Buys Store, and was past officer of the Progress Research Club. Betty was very honored to be the recipient of the 1997 Geauga County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award.She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann “Mazie” (Robin) Smith of Munson and son, James Ballantine II of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Robin (Kristy) II, and Mary Katherine “Katie” Smith, James III, Joshua and Julia Ballantine; great grandchildren, Chase, Madison, and Chloe Smith; brother, Thomas E. Caves of Chagrin Falls and many nieces and nephews.Betty was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Janet (Gus) Mavrolas and sister-in-law, Gloria Caves.The family would like to thank The Residence of Chardon, Florence Bustardo, and Hospice of Care Corp. for their exceptional and loving care over these past five years.A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 7:00PM at Pilgrim Christian Church, 202 South Hambden St., Chardon, Ohio 44024. The family will receive friends following the service in Fellowship Hall. Private family burial will take place at Knollwood Cemetery.Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pilgrim Christian Church Steeple Fund, or to the Cleveland Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
