BARBARA KELSEY, aged 87, died at home on October 14, 2011 after a short illness, surrounded by loving family and caregivers. Only child of Horace and Gretchen Platt, Erie, PA, she graduated from Emma Willard School, Vassar College and Case Western Reserve University (M.A.) She married the late Raymond Kelsey in 1946. They raised a family in Beachwood, moving to Geauga County in 1974. She loved literature, especially poetry, and music, from classical to Broadway. An avid amateur bird-watcher, she taught her children to appreciate the natural world through camping, skiing, hiking and bicycling in the U.S. and abroad. A self-taught cook, she often filled the house with the aroma of freshly-baked bread. Volunteer positions included Cleveland’s Hill House; Head Start; Outreach Librarian in Chardon; Cleveland Museum of Natural History; Instructor of English as a second language for Project Learn; and mentoring young readers at Cleveland’s Intergenerational School for four years even after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. That work was featured on NPR’s “Morning Edition” (2008) and a PBS series on the brain (2009). She is survived by daughters Anne Kelsey (Brooke Myers), St Louis; Mary Kelsey (John Kaminsky), Cleveland Heights; Joan Kelsey (Rex Parsons), Tillamook, OR; Martha Kelsey and Sarah Kelsey Alderfer (Steven), Fairfield, IA; brother-in-law John Kelsey (Bill Antolik), Cleveland Heights; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Project Learn at www.projectlearn.org, or attention Eric Wellman, 2728 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke Episcopal Church, Chardon, on November 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements through Burr Funeral Home, 440-285-2182; www.burrservice.com.
